Acer saccharum
An excellent native tree. Well known for the maple syrup produced from its sap. Dark green foliage turns beautiful shades of yellow, orange and red in the fall.
Prefers moist, fertile, well drained soil. Intolerant of ice-melting chemicals and salt used on highways. Also sensitive to air pollution from traffic. Plant well away from roads.
Prune thin branches in late summer and fall. Will bleed excessively if pruned in winter or spring.
