Cornus alternifolia
A native dogwood that makes an interesting, small shrubby tree with horizontal branches. It has interesting clusters of creamy-white flowers, followed by dark blue berries. Later in the fall, the leaves turn a smoky maroon or plum. The berries are eaten by over 10 species of birds as well as black bears. Deer, rabbit and beavers eat the leaves and stems.
If prefers moist, somewhat acid, deep and well drained soil.
